H.E. Nodar Khaduri, Minister of Finance of Georgia attended the launch of a new penitentiary institution N16 in Rustavi on July 16, 2015. Rehabilitated prison of EU standard was visited by H.E. Irakli Gharibashvili, Prime Minister of Georgia, who spoke about the changed made to the penitentiary system of the country.
Prison for 1048 inmates has been reconstructed and refurbished. Multi-functional building has been thus constructed with a canteen on the ground floor and a library, classrooms, computer lab, auditoriums and spaced for social programs on the first and second floors.
“We put an end to inhuman treatment in prisons and practically carried out a revolutionary transformation in the penitentiary system of the country” noted Prime Minister of Georgia and added that categorization of prisoners by their risk factors is by essence a novelty of a revolutionary significance for a completely new, Georgian penitentiary system.
