German Government Allocates Grant of Almost 24 Million Euros to Georgia for Strengthening Environmental Policy

H.E. Lasha Khutsishvili, Minister of Finance of Georgia and Dr. Klaus Veigel, Regional Director of Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) for South Caucasus signed a Grant Agreement between the Governments of Georgia and Federal Republic of Germany on Biodiversity and Sustainable Local Development in Georgia, as a result of which upto 24 million Euros will be allocated to the country as a grant financing.

Prior to the signing ceremony, H.E. Lasha Khutsishvili, Minister of Finance of Georgia addressed the audience and elaborated on the significance of cooperation between Georgia and Germany, along with H.E. Levan Davitashvili, Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia and H.E. Hubert Knirsch, Ambassador Plenipotentiary and Extraordinary of the Federal Republic of Germany to Georgia.

It is worth noting that KfW has been supporting the country in the following sectors within the scope of a development cooperation reached between the two countries: environment and energy, including energy efficiency, urban and municipal infrastructure development, improved housing for internally displaced persons (IDPs), civil society and public administration.

Particularly appreciated is the support provided by KfW for the payment of social allowances to individuals that were most severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in Georgia.

200 million Euros were allocated towards this end in 2020-2021, out of which 185 million Euros have already been disbursed.
Grant to be received on the grounds of the agreement signed today will be channeled to the following legal entities of public law (LEPL) - Agency of Protected Areas, Forestry Agency of Adjara. Portion of the grant will be used for the capacity building of the latter, while another portion – in support of protected areas inter alia for the establishment of two new protected areas in Racha and Shida Kartli regions of Georgia.
